old man doodle…

…in the sketchbook from the old photographs i got ages ago from the flea market. i have just scanned him in and enlarged him somewhat ready to have a paint with the paints. am going to try painting him abit like i did with the fish-see what happens.

shaun the sheep-what a programme-my favourite one at the moment!

a big fish…

…after painting the little ones, i decided to paint a big one on it’s own and try and do abit more lettering-well focus abit more on lettering-big lettering. if you wish, double click on the image to see it bigger. i tired to paint it on the ‘fish’ page but i have already used that dictionary page for something else. the fish talk is inpsired by a line i read in the jules verne book, twenty odd leagues under the sea.

there they are again…

…these little fish couldnt resist another journey. this time across an old dictionary page. i bought the book from the local flea market in december and it has the best pages in it to paint upon. i am trying to introduce colour into my work and to try and doodle more-doodling what i like to doodle seems to help though i need to start drawing other things now. i had drawn some old people today that i think i will try paint or collage soon.

fish collage…

…oh how i wish i was going to see the sea and all its waves sometime soon. this is abit of experimental digital work if you can call it that. i have just scanned in two layers-scraperboard fish and a tissue collage layer. then i played with the layer setting. nothing exciting i know but just trying to get some visual things going so i understand the computer abit more. still aint taken with digital work-it just all seems abit flat to me-well i aint got a clue what i am doing! i like being able to actually layer things up i guess with the printing work and combining printing techniques, like for example being able to create an etching layer and then taking the print from that to the silkscreen and making seperate layers from that print. like doing what the computer does but actually doing it for yourself. good olde worlde techniques.

houses…

…just thought i would pop the house doodles on my blog-this is a segment of a page. i have been drawing these whenever i can-havent done any for a while. i doodle them on the train back to manchester or huddersfield or on the buses back in huddersfield. i normally try and cover a page of my travelling sketchbook with a journey. the first doodles i ever did this way are really bad but as i kept on doodling they got better but then they got worse as i tried to get to much onto one page. on another note – the book cover work is going abit slow at the moment and the deadline is tomorrow.

book cover work…

…as much as i love doing my lettering style so to speak, i have fallen out with it for afew hours as i have seriously hurt my neck and back by continous hours of doing scraperboard work. i completed the lettering this morning but have been resting since then. my hand now resemebles a claw and i ache all over! i have spent over a day doing the lettering for two book covers and it has taken longer than i had originally thought it would-probably because as usual i phaffed around-more phaffing than normal though! therefore the screen print has been postponed to next week as there is no point in rushing my images just to get it done for monday. i have still got the weekend and as planned will work on collage work and maybe attempt some digital exploring using the intended screenprint layers. the black bit is where the fish and other things will go when i get round to moving my aching joints again!

the milk teeth…

…i finally made the little milk teeth and have squashed them on the scanner with the big one i made yesturday. all are screenprinted onto calico and made exactly the same as the big one except they are tiny. not tiny tiny but tiny. i have another set to make up and have the chance to screenprint more this week which i might aswell do and make the most of the screen. i am planning to maybe make up more things that are printed using screenprinting its just sorting out my time as per normal to fit it all in. there is a big to do list that keeps growing! i think maybe i may have been a dentist in a former life-though i dont know if i believe in that but i cant really explain the reason why i like to draw teeth all the time. it started last year about september time with these little two teeth that i drew that were talking about tasty calories and how they should eat them. from then on i doodle teeth and other little things all the time and they have convo’s with each other. strange.

squashed on the scanner…

…she put me in the scanner as she couldnt be bothered to take a photo of me. how lazy is that? i was created yesturday via screenprint onto calico and then sewn together this evening. silly woman put the label on the wrong way round. how daft is she? i am about 18cm long and filled with afew polypellets and lovely fibre filling. i am waiting for my milk teeth to be made up as they are waiting ever so patiently next to the sewing machine.

teeth…

…this is something i did yesturday at uni in the printroom-which i would live in if i could! i nearly did not print yesturday as it took me about 10 hours in total to work out my layers and ideas-something wasnt clicking into place in my brain. then after exposing the screen and whilst waiting for it to dry, the screen split and i could have cried. sarah the lovely print lady technican fixed the screen and i started printing at about 4.30pm-managed to print until about 7pm as there was a private view exhibition in the foyer bit. the first one is printed on the inside of an envelope and the second is printed onto regular blue pastel paper. i thought the outline of the teeth would come out alot darker but i am happy with the soft effect of the black outline. i am very pleased with how it turned out dispite all the stress and confusion about layers. please double click on them to view them abit bigger.

yay good old black and white materials…

…i love working in black and white! its fab. i decided to buy some scraperboard for the science brief but never used it and now i am working on a newish project. i thought that it was time to use up the materials that gather space, dust and time in the flat. i proper cleaned up the other day only to find that the stuff has erupted all over the place! maybe i was responsible, maybe i wasnt! the ‘toothpaste’ bit was done using a awl etching point thing and i finally found an art shop that sells the scaperfoil tools separate today-hence the tidier speaking tooth! i was determined not to have to buy one of them sets with the pictures in-like a paint by numbers one but for scraperboard. i love teeth!

abit of a colour splash…

…colour and me dont really get on very well. this is an experiment i did today using emulsion paint and collage materials. jennipeg the super woman of colour was and is my inspiration when it comes to colour. i would rather run away from colour unless screen printing of which then i cant get enough colour! i am going to attempt a couple more of these and try and include some colour into my final packaging design.

teeth…

…i love drawing teeth and have finally decided to stitch one. this was created using wire and then stitching the wire to the felt. i scanned in the original drawing and enlarged it via the computer. drawing big scares me-all my doodles are quite small. i used two black seed beads for eyes. i used to stitch like this in foundation year but it takes me forever! i am just trying out some experiments for my packaging project that i am doing at the moment at uni.

science…

…is for logical people and i think like spagetti. i get all in a muddle and my brain ends up feeling like a big knot that i cant get undone. i am slowly learning how to tackle illustration briefs at uni and find that the print room is a most useful tool. these are soft ground etchings created by pressing textures into the soft ground via a good old hefty printing press. these are/were for a molecular science brief and i was focusing on haemoglobin. i think some of the details within the prints look like viruses-so back to the drawing board i reckon. these were printing experiments and i am now working towards a more selective approach with the textures for a possible final image with the possibility of then taking it through another printing process.

experiments…

…some things i have been paying with over last couple of days. knitting with wire is very difficult and stressful and i wouldnt reccomend it unless you can stay calm for a while. etching is a printing process i love doing and at the moment i like to play with textures and see how they print.

bunch of pidgeons…

…seeking a new home. each are £12 with postage and packaging included. i did originally post these as individual photos but thought they looked better all together. on average they are 12cm wide-from their tailend to their beak. length wise they are about 15cm from the hoop in the middle of their body to the tips of their legs. pidgeons are made from cotton and sewn on the sewing machine except for abit of hand stitching. afew are made from printing a collage i made on to fabric printer paper. their eyes are buttons and the body is filled with soft fibre filling. they all have a majic glass pebble inside to help weigh them down abit when hung up using the hoop. please have a browse and email me if you wish to buy a pidgeon, miss_dj020@msn.com. thans for looking and having a spy.

pidgeons…

…i have finally decided to part with some of my creations and are putting some of my pidgeons up for sale. many of them are made from cotton fabric and a couple are made from printing collaged dictionary onto printer fabric cotton. some have lace stitched round their necks. their legs are filled with poly pellets and the body is filled with a soft fibre filling. all pidgeons are sewed on the machine and carefully handstitched together at the top with a hoop to hang them up with. they are available to buy at £12 each with postage and packaging included.

working…

…this is a pic of me very hard at work. this is when i am most happy though sometimes it takes me a while to get started once i have made that start i am away with the working fairies so to speak. i create mess whatever i do and cant help but get everything out and then i put it all away and start all over again. i have an endless list of things to do and create and draw and it seems that list will forever be added to. i am slowly working towards ticking things off but then the mind does abit of thinking and then the list grows.

little fish….

…loads of little fish have swam their way into my sketchbook and are lost in amongst the doodles and the attempt at uni work. i am trying to create them as plushy type toys at the moment-similar idea as the pidgeon tree i knitted and stitched but waves and fissh instead. i can doodle these little swimmers all day and i have introduced some orange ones to the group. they are attempting to find the right way to go, working together as a group. they often argue and call each other names and comment on the sights they see as they swim.

edited – please double click to see the fish abit bigger!

i have been tagged…

….here goes my six werid if not so werid things about me. i will be at this forever so am just going to do it and i know that i will think of better things later that i could have put instead.

1. i love to ramble. i can ramble all day long about nothing and instead of saying a straight sentence will go all round the houses. my friend whos in the army can vouch for this as well as many others…i can write letters for hours on end and not have told you anything new or particularly interesting but i like to give people some nonsense to read.

2. i love taking naps and factor them into my time schedule for the day-naps are very important and i get grouchy sometimes if i havent had a nap for a few days…i do actually sleep on a night like regular people do but naps have to be done.

3. i love my solar powered flip flap plant-its the best-anything like that is fab.

4. i like to doodle strange things over and over again and try to create them-my sketchbook is the same on every page…teeth…pidgeons…sugarcubes and fish.

5. i would love to have my own teashop one day and it will be a cross between somewhere simple to relax and have a bite or a sip with art and sofas mixed together.

6. i would love to have a cat called lemonade and a horse called moo moo and a greyhound called…i havent decided yet. i once had a hamster called marmalade.

wave hello mister sock man…

…have had a little time apart from taking naps to create a new friend from old washed socks. he was very simple and easy to make though his waving arm was meant to look like his other arm but i thought that gave him character so i left it. he now lives in the living room with the sugercubes and the snails. he likes to eat daisy chains and dance in puddles.
